Yorkshire Care Equipment’s wheelchair gesture aids vaccination effort

Yorkshire Care Equipment free wheelchair service

Yorkshire Care Equipment has come to the aid of elderly Harrogate residents that need help getting to Covid-19 vaccine appointments by introducing a free one-day wheelchair hire service.

The wheelchairs can be booked via telephone, email or via its website, and collected at a designated time.

The dealer has a team of employees on hand to manage the cleaning and sanitisation of the equipment before it is reused.

The company, which has served elderly and disabled residents in Harrogate for 25 years, said customers don’t need to pay a deposit or leave photo ID. All it asks is that the wheelchair is returned on the same day.

George Hulbert, sales director at Yorkshire Care Equipment, said the firm decided to introduce the service to support customers that were struggling with their mobility after months of isolating at home.

“We’d spoken to local residents who hadn’t used mobility aids before the pandemic, but now found they didn’t have the strength to stand or walk for long periods. So, we started thinking about how we could help and found a simple solution – lending out our hire wheelchair fleet for free.

“We realised getting out of the house to attend vaccine appointments was going to be challenging for some people unless they had support. That’s why we’ve made our wheelchair hire service free for these occasions.

“The idea is, this will help anyone who doesn’t already have a mobility scooter or wheelchair and suddenly finds themself needing one. But, of course, anyone can reserve and collect a wheelchair to help someone attend their appointment.”
