A Shopmobility service in Middlesbrough has bought itself an early Christmas present to help it cope with the anticipated rise in demand over the shopping season.
Middlesbrough Shopmobility has added three new mobility scooters to its fleet that will be hired out to people over the Christmas period.
The equipment was purchased in partnership with Middlesbrough Environment City. The service allows users to hire a scooter for £1 per hour.
Active travel administrator, Margaret Tonkin, told the Darlington & Stockton Times: “Since we moved to the bus station, demand for the service has continued to grow, so we’re delighted to be able to extend our fleet.
“The scooters are especially popular during the busy Christmas period, and I’m sure our new arrivals will prove a hit with regulars and new users alike.”
Shopmobility services around the country have been generally struggling to stay afloat as demand and costs increase but funding does not.
Certain services have had to introduce membership fees to stay operational.
