Yorkshire retailer, Professional Mobility, has stepped in to revive and run a local Shopmobility service during the busy Christmas period.
The dealer has struck a short-term agreement for the next three weeks with Crystal Peaks shopping centre in Sheffield.
It will see mobility scooters made available for Christmas shoppers to hire after Shopmobility Sheffield closed suddenly and without warning earlier this month, leaving immobile locals stuck.
Professional Mobility, which has its base and warehouses in Doncaster, was invited by the shopping centre and began operating the service yesterday.
It will charge users of the service the same hire rate as the previous Shopmobility charity. It hopes to operate seven days a week from 9.30am to 4.30pm.
The shopping centre is looking for a longer-term, ‘sustainable’ solution after the Christmas period, according to a local newspaper.
The former Shopmobility charity closed when it ran out of funding. The council said it was cutting a £14,000 annual grant after the charity lost its tender bid to retailer, Clark and Partners.
Clark and Partners launched its own mobility hire service in a local market.
