Over 3 in 10 English authorities not prosecuting Blue Badge misuse

According to the latest statistics from the Department for Transport, Blue Badge ownership rose 6.5% in the 12-month period of April 2019 to March 2020.

This means that there were a total of 2.44 million Blue Badges held in England, as of 31 March 2020.

Additionally, there were a total of 966,000 Blue Badges issued in the 12 months leading to 31 March 2020, 4.2% more than in the equivalent period in 2018/19.

Meanwhile, there was a slight drop in prosecutions for misuse of Blue Badges.

A total of 1,429 prosecutions took place, 0.2% fewer than the previous year.

However, it was also revealed that 31% of authorities in England had no policy in place for the prosecution of those misusing Blue Badges.

Furthermore, of the 69% of authorities with a policy, 38% saw no prosecutions in the year to 31 March 2020.

London, meanwhile, had relatively few Blue Badge holders compared to the rest of the country, but had over half of the prosecutions across England (53%).

Only 2% of prosecutions across the country were not for non-holders using someone else’s Blue Badge.
