Harrods says care home tunnel is a non-starter

Harrods has scotched reports that a luxury care home will be linked to the department store via a tunnel.

Plans were revealed in August for the 34-apartment development that would be linked via a tunnel formerly used by employees to Harrods (see Luxury retirement home will have tunnel to Harrods).

In a statement to Care Home Professional, Harrods said: “We can confirm that whilst there was a tunnel between this site and Harrods many years ago, the tunnel was filled in when the east side of Hans Crescent was re-developed in 2002.

“It is not physically possible to re-instate the tunnel from this site to the Harrods store. Therefore no such link exists.”

Plans by Singapore-based City Developments for the care home, which is to be situated on the site of a car park behind Harrods were granted approval in August.

The £200 million care home will include a 24-hour medical centre, parking space for eight mobility scooters, a physiotherapy room, gym, swimming and hydrotherapy pools, and sauna and steam rooms.

Its apartments are expected to cost in excess of £5 million each.
