Handicare Accessibility is expanding its global production capacity to support an increased demand for curved stairlifts in North America.

The company has announced a multi-million CAD investment in a new production line at parent company Savaria Corporation’s existing Toronto facility.

Handicare was acquired by Savaria in March to create a new global leader in accessibility, employing more than 2,400 people worldwide and with a portfolio now including an extended range of stairlifts, home elevators and platform lifts.

This investment is set to increase output and reduce lead time for Handicare’s Freecurve single rail stairlift for distributors in Canada and the United States.

Handicare vice president of Operations, Peter Slack, said: “Worldwide demand for our stairlifts has increased rapidly driven by our ageing population and more recently the pandemic. More people are future-proofing their homes so they can remain living safely and independently into later life. Customers expect speedy service, and our distributors rely on us to get our stairlifts to them as quickly as possible. This investment will give us unrivalled lead times in North America, and another reason for distributors to choose Handicare as their stairlift partner.

“Working together with Savaria, we will combine our expertise, industry-leading manufacturing technology and facilities to efficiently reach our growing worldwide network of distributors and their customers. Before the end of 2021, we’ll be able to deliver our Freecurve stairlift in under a week to our North American distributors thanks to this investment in Savaria’s already excellent in-house capabilities in Toronto.”

Handicare manufactures straight and curved stairlifts at its existing facilities in the Netherlands, the UK and China.

Introducing its technology into Savaria’s facility is set give partners access to the fullest range of curved (single and twin rail) and straight stairlifts made in North America.

Savaria vice president Operations & Integrations, Sebastien Bourassa, said: “Handicare’s sophistication of manufacturing and market reach are an exceptional complement to our business. We have an excellent track record for short lead times due to our in-house capabilities in laser, break press, welding and painting and we’re excited about the synergies to be gained from the manufacturing expertise of the team at Handicare.”
