GET TO KNOW: Laura McFarlane, operations manager, wheelAIR

Laura McFarlane GtK CROP

How long have you worked for your current employer and how did you get into the industry?

I have worked with wheelAIR for 18 fantastic months. I started an internship here while finishing my degree at the University of Glasgow. And when I graduated I was invited to stay on!

What’s your biggest achievement in the market to date?

Story continues below

I would say that building wheelAIR’s social media presence from scratch has been one of my biggest achievements. Our various channels have been core to developing our brand and reaching people we can help across the world.

What do you most enjoy about working in the industry?

Working to promote a product that improves people’s lives is amazing. Hearing positive feedback makes the long hours worth it!

What’s the hardest part of your job?

I’d probably say the hardest part is juggling my workload. Working in an ever-growing start-up makes my role very diverse so no day is ever the same. This makes it interesting as well as challenging! A good combo I think.

Which other company (inside or outside the industry) do you most admire and why?

I admire Brew Gooder as a brand. It is a social business with a fantastic mission and company ethos.

What’s the best piece of advice you’ve ever received?

“Try to look for solutions rather than get too stressed.” Corien, wheelAIR’s director, has been a fantastic role model. Faced with what seem like hopelessly stressful situations she has kept her cool and quickly found solutions.

If you could invite any four people (dead or alive) to a dinner party, who would they be?

Imagine the conversation between artists Jackson Pollock, Henri Matisse, Frida Kahlo and Andy Warhol. It would certainly be intense!

What do you enjoy doing outside of work?

I enjoy getting outside and exploring. In Scotland there is an activity called ‘Munro Bagging’ where you count how many hills over 914m that you climb!

What was the last thing that made you laugh out loud?

My dog Lottie managed to open the kitchen door and steal some of our leftover BBQ. Her guilty and elated mood afterwards was hard not to chuckle at!
