GET TO KNOW: Kate Sheehan, Occupational Therapist, The OT Service

How long have you worked for your current employer and how did you get into the industry?

I founded The OT Service in 2015, however I have been an occupational therapist for over 32 years and have worked in the NHS, Social Services and the private sector. I decided at the age of 14 to become an occupational therapist as a wife of a visiting colleague of my father was one and was so passionate about her profession her enthusiasm rubbed off on me.

What’s your biggest achievement in the industry to date?

I am passionate about my profession and I would say my two best achievements so far are to have raised the value of OT in the collaborative work with companies and how my profession can really support business goals. The second is running the first accessible housing courses in Bosnia and Croatia.

What do you most enjoy about working in the industry?

The buzz, the caring attitude and the ‘lets solve that problem’ solution focussed approach.

What’s the hardest part of your job?

I love my job and have boundless energy but sometimes I really need to have a better work-life balance, I am working on this goal but to be honest there are so many exciting things happening, it is really difficult.

What’s the best piece of advice you’ve ever received?

You are bright, articulate and full of energy, never underestimate your abilities and aim high (my dad).

What do you enjoy doing outside of work?

When I have spare time, my favourite thing is to spend time with family and friends. I love the theatre and having moved to Stratford-upon-Avon, we spend a lot of time at the RSC, seeing some amazing performances.

Which other company (inside or outside the industry) do you most admire and why?

I do not want to upset any one of the companies we work with, but there is a small independent equipment company called Independent Living Consultants. They epitomise what we at The OT Service strive for: client centred, approachable, flexible and innovative.
