A supplier and distributor of mobility products has struck a deal with Tukimet Oy, the manufacturer of the Wheellator solution, to supply the product to dealers and local authorities in the UK.

Polymorit has taken on the product, which is a combination of a wheelchair and a rollator and which has seen considerable success in Europe since launching two years ago. The company hopes to replicate the Wheellator’s European reception in the UK market.

Finland-based Tukimet Oy has high hopes for the Wheellator in the UK, expecting “an explosion of sales” by the end of next year.

Polymorit’s managing director, Howard Payne, plans to make the Wheellator a key part of the firm’s strategy to return to growth after it slowed down around two-and-a-half-years ago, before Mr Payne bought the company.

“Going forward we expect to see huge growth actually. We bought the business and it ticked over for a couple of years but now we’ve got to go for growth…from something very small to something reasonable.

“The Wheellator is a very important part of our strategy going forward next year. We’re really looking to hit the sport and therapy markets and the equipment providers. As the importer we’re not going to be selling much to end-users, that’s not really our model, we need to empower resellers. We’re looking for people who are prepared to commit some time and effort.”

Initially Polymorit will primarily target the areas where the Wheellator will be specified by local authorities, so OTs are high on its list. But Mr Payne added that further down the line it is likely that retailers will get on board when they know there is a demand among end-users.

Mr Payne added that when looking for a product to import in the UK market at the Trade Days show he needed exclusivity, a unique product and a premium product.

“We’re not going to be a ‘me too’ supplier or do what someone else is doing – we’ve got to be unique. I went out specifically to look for someone like that and Tukimet Oy were out there looking for someone like us.”

According to Tukimet Oy, Polymorit’s order for the Whellator was so substantial that the products will have to be shipped in three stages.

The Wheellator is manufactured from steel pipe, has wide puncture-proof font wheels and easy-to-use breaks with bearings and no wearing plastic parts. For indoor and outdoor use, the Wheellator has an adjustable backrest, is CE marked and is packed with no need for further assembly.
