Dolphin Mobility Yorkshire & Cumbria has been recognised for a special digital survey system it uses to aid stairlift installations that reduces waste and saves the NHS money.

The business beat well-known supermarket chains and large industrial firms to be crowned in the environmental good practice category of The National Green Apple Awards.

The award recognises Dolphin’s use of a digital survey system that uses advanced photo technology and software algorithms to make surveying staircases easier and more accurate.

Dolphin’s system is particularly useful for more complex staircases that have curves, spirals, landings or turns.

The specially developed electronic system maximises the accuracy of a complex staircase survey while minimising the time needed to carry it out.

Judges highlighted three main benefits of the system including economic, environmental and health and well-being.

The system reduces waste, scrapped rails and the additional cost of re-surveying and remaking the rails.

There are economic benefits to the NHS from being able to speed up the manufacture, delivery and installation of the stairlift, which reduce instances of bed-blocking, the judges said.

Environmental benefits include a reduction of wasted or scrapped rails which cannot be used or recycled. A reduction in use of additional energy consumption from no longer having to re-survey and re-order new rail systems was also noted as a benefit.

Health and wellbeing benefits includes disabled and elderly people being discharged back to a home environment more quickly than previously, which in most cases is preferable than being in a hospital or care facility.

Dolphin Mobility is a member of the BHTA and the Yorkshire and Cumbria branch is based in York. It was also singled out in the awards for its dedication to sourcing and using local suppliers.

Dolphin Mobility’s managing director, Gareth Watkinson, the business “endeavours to ensure a speedy and accurate sales, survey and installation process” for stairlift customers, in addition to limiting its carbon footprint.

Top winners of the Green Apple awards go on to have the chance of representing their country at an international event in Brussels next year.

The Green Organisation is an international, independent, non-profit environmental group dedicated to recognising, rewarding and promoting environmental best practice around the world.
