Cooling wheelchair cushion moves into commercial production

A company that recently secured £100,000 in investment to fund the launch of a cooling wheelchair cushion has confirmed that the first units are now in production.

Staels Design initially needed £30,000 to bring its WheelAir product to market but successfully managed to smash that target and has now pressed ‘go’ on the assembly line.

The company made some final design changes ahead of the production run, which it says were to optimise the equipment. It expects the first pieces to be ready for sale in October.

Staels Design is currently in the process of unveiling a new website, which will also sell the product.

Founder Corien Staels was recently awarded a business grant from Scottish EDGE – which supports Scottish entrepreneurs – after going up against other start ups.

She has also been nominated in the Young Entrepreneur of the Year category of the Women in Business Awards.

The WheelAir is a battery powered, ergonomically designed cushion that cools the back of the user by gently blowing air onto their backs.
