CASE STUDY: Peter and Permobil

The extraordinary story of Dr Peter Scott-Morgan showcases that complex rehab is more than just for medical needs but also allowing people to live their lives to the fullest.

Peter: the human cyborg charts his journey as he embraces cutting-edge technological solutions in an attempt to overcome ALS (known as motor neurone disease in the UK).

Permobil began working with Dr Scott-Morgan in 2018 after he had identified the Permobil F5 VS power chair as meeting his needs. Even with all the power functions the F5 VS includes, he challenged us with an array of customisations needed in order to incorporate the very best third-party additions.

Gordon Cunningham, general manager at Permobil UK & Ireland, said: “The starting point for Project Charlie, as we affectionately dubbed the project, was the same as with any chair: understanding that a power chair is not just a mobility device to get from A to B, but that the person in the chair sees it as his or her lifeline to life. Our job is to then do all we can to make that possible.

While Pete Jones, Permobil product rehab specialist who worked closely with Peter and Project Charlie, added: “The ideas, imagination and the level of planning that have gone into his ability to live a fulfilling life have left us all in awe. As can be seen on screen, Peter›s drive and optimism is not to be underestimated or overlooked.”

Permobil and Peter together decided to stagger the customisation of the F5 VS so he could benefit from it as soon as possible. Charlie Mark 1 was built and customised at our workshop in northern Sweden and delivered to Peter in November 2018.

The last of the major customisations were completed in late 2019 when the Eyegaze and avatar technology as well as an intuitive co-pilot attendant control was included and the addition of pressure relieving seating upgrades to better meet Peters needs.

Permobil concluded: “Naturally, we fine-tuned some of the existing customisations too. Not your run-of-the-mill customisation. Peter is not your run-of-the-mill person either.”
