An app designed to make breakdown recoveries much speedier and hassle-free for mobility scooter users has launched for people using equipment leased on the Motability scheme.
Motability’s breakdown recovery service, Motability Assist, hopes the new app, which claims to be able to pin-point a user’s exact location, will be particularly helpful for people in unfamiliar or rural areas.
The smartphone app works by sending the user’s location to Motability Assist, who will then coordinate a recovery.
Motability has partnered with Autohome Assist, a specialist recovery firm, which has been contracted to provide assistance to scooter and powerchair users on the scheme.
Kim Robinson, project manager at Authome Assist, which launched the app alongside Motability, said: “With the introduction of the new app, available for any smartphone, our team will be able to obtain your exact location at the click of a button.”
To take advantage of the app, called Motability Recovery, users have to download it in advance of being in a breakdown situation.
In the event of a breakdown, users can open the app and click on a ‘Rescue me’ button, generating a text message with the coordinates of their exact location, and then press send.
The app is only available to people using scooters and powerchairs on the Motability scheme.
The new launch marks an extension of Motability’s strategy to keep customers as mobile as possible.
Its strict criteria place dealers and suppliers under pressure to ensure clients on the scheme have access to spare parts and quick servicing.
There are a handful of apps for mobility scooter and powerchair users but they are all designed to help users navigate accessible routes and locate accessible venues.
Motability Assist’s app is the first in the industry to offer breakdown recovery.
