Antimicrobial bathroom technology shows promise against coronavirus

Gainsborough Specialist Bathrooms’ antimicrobial BioCote bath technology, designed to eliminate up to 99.9% of harmful microbes, has shown effectiveness against a strain of coronavirus.

The bath manufacturer, part of the Gainsborough Healthcare Group, adds a silver-ion additive to its products, which gives them their antimicrobial properties.

This gives protection against harmful microbes such as influenza H1N1, E. coli, salmonella and antibiotic-resistant MRSA.

New tests on the product have proven that it combats the Munich strain of feline coronavirus (not COVID-19) by 90% in two hours.

Gainsborough hopes this could pave the way for a more effective and widespread solution based on its technology.

Testing continues to ascertain its effectiveness in regards to COVID-19.

Peter Eckhardt, CEO, Gainsborough Healthcare Group, commented: “The proven effectiveness of our BioCote antimicrobial technology continues to benefit vulnerable bathers and care staff during these challenging times.

“Our specialist care baths deliver an outstanding reduction in infection risks and cross contamination particularly within high traffic, communal bathing facilities. The news that a strain of feline Coronavirus can be combatted effectively by BioCote is encouraging news, hopefully further tests will prove equally impressive in relation to Covid-19.

“Our engineers continue to service and support our accessible, Superbug-beating bathing solutions in care homes and other healthcare facilities – enhanced by the safety of our protection promise.”
