Independent mobility retailers face some major challenges in the current environment, but it is often in such circumstances that true innovation comes to the fore.
Far from being overwhelmed by some of the market obstacles confronting his business, Neil Medhurst, managing director of Gold Star Mobility, has taken his company’s fate into his own hands.
As an engineer, he has turned his attention to conceiving and developing his own mobility products and accessories as a means of diversifying sales.
This year, Neil has changed tack so that he is straddling both end-user and trade sales. While keeping one eye on ensuring his retail arm stays afloat, the Dartford man is bringing a new scooter key fob he has designed to market and will make it available to UK dealers.
Set to launch at Trade Days in October, Neil is confident his new product will bring in extra margin for dealer customers, who he says will be able to install the product in under 40 minutes.
While the Gold Star boss hopes the product will open up new markets, he remains firmly committed to his core retail business. “We’re not going to go away from retailing. We enjoy what we do. We enjoy helping people. But this is a way of keeping our business a business,” he explains.
