Eden Mobility has “hit the jackpot” in gauging what its customers want in a mobility scooter after its product styled on a Ford Model T completely sold out in just its first two months of being put on the shelf.
Speaking at Naidex yesterday, promotions manager Garry Hopkinson, confirmed that the initial stock of 100 Gatsby scooters sold out quickly after it was brought into Eden’s portfolio before Christmas.
The scooters were initially trialled in five of Eden’s stores but they have proved so popular they are now being retailed across all 31 of the dealer’s sites.
Hopkinson said that Eden has had a “brilliant response” to the Gatsby at the Naidex show so far, with no other similar products on offer.
“When you see them in the flesh they’re absolutely brilliant. They’re just completely different and there’s nothing else like them.
“They’re designed in Switzerland so it’s quality gear. It’s not just about the aesthetics, there’s something underneath that actually works.
“They’re being sold across all 31 of our stores. We’ve taken the idea of go for something slightly different, and people do want something different.
“There are lots of people on scooters who don’t want to be on scooters so they’re looking for some excuse, something different to have. It’s just awareness of knowing what your customers want and we seem to have hit the jackpot with these.
“We’ve got a rolling order now coming in. It’s very impressive. Everybody’s been saying that they thought it would be more money than it is. It’s £3,995, in the grand scheme of things that’s not a whole lot of money anymore.”
Store manager for Eden’s Scunthorpe site, Sarah Howe, added that customers “fall in love” with the Gatsby scooters.
She said: “It’s unique to us as a company, so it’s exclusive. It’s about taking a risk to see what people want and also what people in 10 or 20 years’ time and this seems to be the product. They’ve really taken off.”
The Gatsby boasts Model T-style headlights and a “captain-style” seat that offers maximum comfort and can swivel 360 degrees.
Inclination-adjustable armrests and adjustable back and headrests allow users to obtain the perfect driving position, while the large, lockable front bonnet provides plenty of room for storage.
The Gatsby features a fully independent suspension that ensures a smooth ride and pneumatic, air-filled tyres.
