Mobility aid supplier, Van Os Medical, has been declared by one dealer as a leader in scooter innovations, following the launch of the Excel Sportrek.
Gold Star Mobility, based in Dartford, believes that the brand is paving the way for modern mobility scooters and described the Sportrek as one of its most popular scooters.
“One of the best ones and most innovative scooters is the Van Os Excel Sportrek, we feel. They took the batteries away from underneath the seats and put them on the floor where the user’s feet go,” said Neil Medhurst, managing director.
The design lowers the centre of gravity and the space under the seat where the battery would have been has been turned into a lockable boot.
Medhurst continued: “In my mind the scooter looks no different but that’s quite a big change from what scooters are doing at the moment and that’s quite a good design idea. We stock that scooter, we like it and it’s worked for us because their changes and innovative ideas have worked for us and my customers like them as well. The industry is coming up with different things but not enough of them. It’s an industry that’s been stood still for a long time.”
The dealership believes that mobility scooter suppliers are upping the ante when it comes to product design and the technology installed within scooters. He, like many retailers in the industry, recognise that manufacturers are moving away from traditional scooter designs as consumers demand products that look ‘less disabled’.
For Medhurst, to capitalise on the tastes of baby boomers who want luxury in addition to necessity, suppliers need to offer LED lights, better colours, USB ports and a host of other attractive features. However, change is not coming fast enough, he believes.
