The Dealer of the Year (South) award recognises the region’s top-performing mobility dealerships that have demonstrated commitment and innovation to drive their businesses, and the industry, forward, over what has been a challenging year.

Recare has had a busy 12 months. Recently taking over a former Millbrook Healthcare retail outlet to expand its portfolio, the dealer has been working to supply individuals and contractual work within the local market nationally and worldwide. Forever keeping an eye overseas, Recare has managed to build on its strategy to secure exclusive distribution deals for international manufacturers. A supplier recently flew members of the team to Europe to test its products and gather their opinion before releasing them into the UK. Recare then managed to sell over half of the supplier’s units in the UK before endorsing its stamp on the industry with one of the largest dealer stands at Naidex.
Deemed by the BHTA’s suppliers as the trade group’s top distributor of 2018, TPG DisableAids has moved from strength to strength in the last year based on its ethos of continued learning and proactivity. Manufacturers have recognised the way in which the dealer has added value to its products in the form of marketing, demonstrations and full engineering back-up. Aside from plans to build a 6,000 square foot unit on-site, TPG has also been developing its apprentice programme which takes on at least one apprentice a year and is exemplary in tackling the industry’s skills shortage and lack of young men and women.
As one of the most expansive retailers in the South, Clearwell has had to push hard to stay ahead of competitors racing to keep up. It showed in its most recent store opening, marking its 12th site, that it is prepared to invest heavily in new technologies and adjust its shop model to keep up with trend. The 1,800 square foot shop is the largest mobility outlet in Crawley and features an interactive touch screen that allows customers to view Clearwell’s online product range and order items. Syncing online with bricks-and-mortar in this way is an industry first and shows Clearwell continues to blaze a trail in the sector.
A go-to retailer for people with mobility issues in the South, Better Mobility has been building on what is already a substantial and far-reaching operation from its unit in Hemel Hempstead. Investing in new staff to bolster its servicing and sales departments, the dealer has been working to ensure it has all the necessary foundations in place to allow further growth. Diversifying itself further still, Better Mobility took its first step into distribution, giving the business a new edge. Having started out to fill a gap in the market, Better Mobility continues to operate in a way that makes it different from competitors and makes it the top choice for people across the South.
2018 has seen Ableworld Southampton achieve record sales, in line with its umbrella group’s success. From turning over £590,000 in its first year in 2014, Ableworld Southampton’s most recent sales show more than £1m of stock shifted. Much of this has come from the company’s dedication to its stairlift division in recent months, which equates to around a third of its total revenue and is rapidly expanding due to customer feedback and recommendations. It has expanded its customer base to more than 7,500 registered clients with 36% of new customers having arrived at the store through word-of-mouth. The franchise continues to be one of the most visited outlets in the South.
